Electronic Music Producer | EMP

Learn to produce the quality electronic music you love in small class sizes. From getting to grips with you music production software, to mastering your finished EP to a professional standard. In this program at our boutique facility, you will benefit from our superior roster of instructors, who will share their knowledge and techniques with you.

Garnish students can opt in to take a UK-accredited ‘Level 3 Diploma’, without any official prerequisites or high school grades. Also, Garnish was the first music production school in the UK to offer the Music Grades system for music production, and all music production diploma learners, worldwide are entered for the Grade 8 examination at the end of their program as well. More on music production grades on our London website here. Both qualifications carry UCAS points, but even if UK music production qualifications do not obviously pertain to our students’ goals, they (and perhaps more so their parents) can be rest assured that our music production program meets a national standard of accreditation. Please note that both qualifications are not recognized by the United States education system.

We are an official Ableton certified training center, and all GMP learners worldwide qualify for a 40% discount. Alongside Ableton Live Suite, you will get knee-deep with Logic Pro X, which is used by many to finish songs. You will also be trained on high-end 3rd party software plugins which runs alongside Ableton and Logic, including Native Instruments Komplete, Sylenth, Serum and a few freeware secret weapons we will not be revealing on this page!

With projects to work on outside of class time, in and out of our studios, and our strategically placed mentoring sessions; you will write, produce, engineer, mix, master, and learn how to release and promote your very own EP. All diploma learners can book our professional acoustically treated mixing & mastering facility to get a professional, polished sound.

Introduction to Music Production in Ableton

You will get to grips with this revolutionary DAW within weeks of class, with Ableton Live being the nerve center of your creativity. Through our hands-on instruction, you will discover the key concepts that Ableton Live offers, including the session and arrangement windows, clips, scenes, and warping.  Learn about MIDI clips, the MIDI note editor and through a series of exercises you will program and create beats, bass-lines and melodies with MIDI instruments.

Electronic Music Composition

Overlooked by many, but so useful in the long run, our electronic music composition section will save you hours of ‘hitting and hoping’!  We will provide you with tools that show which chords go well together for your style and show you how to program chords that ‘work’, bass lines that groove, and lead lines that are catchy. We’ve had classically trained learners do this section of our program come away saying they gained a lot from our methods.

Audio Engineering

Learn the science of audio engineering and recording. Full of recording techniques, tips and tricks. Special emphasis is on recording and producing vocals. Because even if we don’t sing ourselves, we still need to be able to encourage, coach and produce artists and session vocalists, and the more we know about singing, vocal production and recording vocals, the better the main part of our song – the lead vocal is going to sound!  Of course, even though we cover vocal technique, actual singing in class is not mandatory — it is ok to just listen!

Logic Pro X

Many electronic music producers use Logic Pro X at the later stages of their production process and some only use Logic Pro X. This is why we think it’s important you at least shake hands with it on this comprehensive program.

“I switched to Ableton from Logic many years ago, but after some A/Bing in my studio recently, I could hear that Logic sounded better than Ableton so I decided I needed to brush up in Logic to get the best of both worlds. I called Garnish and, of course the guys were great and got me back up to speed in no time” Jamie Jones

Mixing & Mastering

First, we step out of what you would learn as a professional engineer by covering acoustics and how to set up your home studio environment correctly. Then it’s on to the meat and potatoes:  in-depth EQ, filling the frequency spectrum, dynamic controllers, mixing vocals, how to make just a few elements sound huge, and making all your parts sound as one, exploring all the new amazing plugins used by the pros.

Electronic Sound Design

Many pro electronic music producers do not get past subtractive synthesis in their entire career, but you will cover subtractive, wavetable, granular, additive and frequency modulated synthesis. They’ll also be sampling, resampling, glitch, and more advanced beat-making techniques in this section as you develop your sound.

Advanced Ableton & Synthesis

By this point in the program, you’ll have gone further than many professional producers with your sound design skills. We take it even further by introducing you to Reaktor Ensembles and Max4live devices. You’ll also cover advanced sampling and the power of Kontakt alongside Ableton Live techniques, including advanced warping and Racks & Chains. At the end of the module, you will learn how to apply your music for media (film and TV).

Live Performance

You will focus on getting your projects finished taking advantage of bespoke tips and advice in a concentrated blast of mentoring sessions. You’ll also be introduced to Ableton Live for performance by understanding how to take tracks to the stage and perform them Live for yourself and for other artists if that’s a route that interests you. Also, you’ll learn advanced MIDI techniques for every live scenario available today.
